F.A.Q.

Should a doormat go inside or outside?

Door mats can go both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor mats are great for keeping mud, water, dirt, and debris from your home, but they need to be made of a material that is resistant to elements and made to last. An indoor mat has the same functions as an outdoor mat; however, you may need to clean your indoor mat more often. Opt for an outdoor mat and a foyer mat for a finished feel.

Do doormats keep dirt out of the home?

Door mats are your home’s first defense against dirt, mud, water, and other debris. While they can’t keep everything out, they help limit the dirt you track into the house. If you still want to decrease the dirt, have guests and visitors leave their shoes at the door. Place a doormat in your foyer, asking guests to remove their shoes.

How do I prevent my doormat from sliding?

High-quality doormats should grip the floor properly to prevent slippage or accidents. While not every material is designed to grip the floor, there are additions you can make. Add rug grippers or carpet tape that keeps your mat moored where it needs to be. Otherwise, rugs with a built-in rubber backing or a grip underlay are designed to keep your door mat from slipping. You might also try adding in a rug pad for an extra bit of safety.

The Doormat Guide

The doormat is the first thing guests see when they arrive at your home. It may be a small item on your home decor checklist, but doormats work double-duty. They frame the entrance of your house and provide a layer of protection from dirt, water, mud, and other elements.

Size

Doormats come in a range of sizes and shapes. A general rule of thumb is to match the mat size to the width of your door or go slightly smaller. If your doormat is too large, it will look out of place. A standard doormat size is 30 X 48 inches for a single door and 36 X 72 inches for a double door. You’ll also want to consider the thickness of the mat. A high pile might not clear the swing of the door and won’t remove dirt as well as short pile versions.

Type

Coir

Coir mats have a natural look because they are created using fibers from coconut shell husks. Coir doormats are one of the most common doormat types. The coarse texture is excellent for scraping mud and dirt off shoes, and its durability is ideal for high-traffic areas.
